Join WriteClub's Alison Powell and Ash Bond of Flying Monkey Yoga for a deeply nourishing winter retreat.  Our guided journey will take us through gentle movement, personal writing and further creative exploration of our winding inner landscape.

Set in the calm of the rolling Devonshire countryside, Into The Labyrinth is a retreat that uses story, ceremony and yoga to take you deep into your own inner world. Using labyrinth as a focus, we will guide you through story, ceremony and yoga to a place of stillness, healing and rest. The retreat offers you the opportunity to meet yourself at your centre, to witness your own winding path, and to acknowledge the similarities and differences between all of our stories. It’s a chance to unwind, to find freedom, balance and direction.

Alison and Ash have evolved their retreat offerings to explore the relationship between the body and the page. As practising yoga teachers and writers, they have come to a deep experiential understanding of the connections between breath and written word, between muscle and memory, between movement and emotional energy. In their workshops and retreats they create a safe and solid space for you to delve into your own stories, bring them to light through your writing and transform them into a new truth with which you can walk in beauty and strength.

Into The Labyrinth seeks to provide a powerful and supportive space for you to completely let go to the healing and transformation that this weekend retreat offers. Earthy, elemental Yoga will allow you to sink down into the layers of the emotional body, uncovering stories that you tell yourself and others. You will then be guided to write these stories out, to share them, celebrate them, thank them and, where appropriate, let them go.

I was soon wrapped in the love of the place and people and had the most amazing weekend. Just what I needed. I gained so much from the quiet, the company and camaraderie, the gentle yoga, the breath work, the soulful songs, the stories, the delicious food, the gorgeous room...”  — SANDRA

Recently, her stories have appeared in Mslexia magazine, the Guardian newspaper and various flash fiction anthologies. Her debut novel won runner-up prize in the 2015 Bridport Prize for First Novels and was shortlisted for the Janklow and Nesbit Award. She worked closely with performer Ann Randolph on the Write You Life module at the Esalen Institute in California and completed an MA in Creative Writing at Bath Spa University in 2015. She has since established the popular WriteClub in Bristol, a place of inspiration and encouragement for creative writers. Through her work with the national organisation Poetry By Heart Alison has run workshops on poetry and creativity at numerous universities and other venues throughout the UK. She always takes great delight in hearing fresh new words.

Her yoga practice goes back to her youth and she is trained in the Sivananda Yoga tradition. She regularly assists on yoga teacher training courses in the UK and in India, and runs Yoga Nidra and Asana classes in and around Bristol. She is fascinated with dreams, shamanic trance work and poetry. As a Master Practitioner of NLP, Alison offers clarity and direction in her communication, an ability to listen closely and to help others on their own journeys.

“Yoga is my home, my heart, my place to find steadiness, inspiration and a deep connection to my higher self.”

A yogi with the soul of a poet, Ash believes that yoga is the steady fire that fuels the body and inspires the mind. In yoga Ash has found a tool for liberation, a means to heal and to awaken our deeper authentic selves.

After spending a number of years as a secondary school teacher, Ash turned to yoga as a full time path, one that she has now been following for more than a decade. She has taught and travelled internationally, including five years teaching in Malaysia, China and Thailand and on the Freedom through Movement project in Palestine.

Believing fully that presence is nurtured beyond the mat, Ash embraces influences from many movement patterns in her yoga teaching: rock climbing, running and freediving are woven into integrated postures, steady bodywork and peaceful breath-centric restorative practices. Inspiration for her classes is rooted in the Earth’s elements and in the bodies and stories of the students that she welcomes. This is a time of wild transition and she looks forward to starting new chapters with you.

“Yoga for me is a chance to remember what I have forgotten; to allow myself to feel.”
